My Name is Jarge Sir!
This little tale is not an Original of mine.
It is told from my memory from about fifty years ago.
In my own words. It may differ slightly from the Record.
I may wander off the Beaten Path. So,I beg your forgiveness.
This one I heard from an Old Vinyl Record I had of the
Newfoundland Comedian and Storyteller the late Al Clouston.
If you remember Al you probably have trouble sleeping and are
prone to Back Pain.
Al often spoke fondly of his friend the Great Len Ludlow who
played the harmonium at Church and was the Choir Director.
Well for your info Len has nothing to do with this yarn whatsoever.Only that slurping huge amounts of Coffee causes me to wander
and mention names such as Len Ludrow.Anyhow I digress whatever that means.
When our Father of Confederation the late Joseph R.Smallwood was campaigning
to be Premier.I will say he landed on Bay of Islands which was populated
back then. The locals all gathered down at the Wharf to Welcome the Godfather of Confederation
to their little Isle.In the traditional Politician like manner Premier Joe started shaking hands
with the Adults,Kissing babies and squeezing face cheeks of small Children.Exchanging formalities
Making small talk until he moved up the Hill to the Hall where the Rally was to take Place.
Joey asked one Old man his name.He replied.”It is Jarge Sir! How is your wife Jarge? Not good! She is dead Sir!” Sorry to hear that and the Premier moved on.On his return to the Wharf a big crowd was waiting to wish Premier Joe a Bon Voyage and a fond farewell. Our hero Jarge was standing in the same spot and once again Joe approached him like they never met and asked.”What is your name?” He replied.” It is still Jarge Sir! and how is your wife Jarge?” Jarge answered.”She is still dead Sir.”To be a good Politician having a good memory helps.
