My Last Good Bye
My father passed away in july 2005 and he wrote this poem just before he was going up to newfoundland again. he asked me to come up later in the week. i am his only daughter and he has 2 sons. i promised i would get his poem in the downhomer. As the evening sun sets in the west on the hills they look so grand. It's a place i know i will not forget it's my home in Newfoundland. I have traveled many places on the sea and on the land. I always dreamed of going back to my home in Newfoundland. And now as i am leaving home as I have done in the past, my friends will say good luck, good bye until next year we will call this another last. Time so quickly passes on leaving only memories of the past. I think again of a trip down home this may be my last. As i think about the years gone bye, so many good ones in the past I never thought some day i'd say, this year will be my last. And now that I am last of six, but never in my dreams, as I walk along the narrow road, and up the winding lane, My friends and family all around, and the old house still looks the same. Morning came and i awake to find it's just another dream of my home in newfoundland. (from 1946 to 2005, I made 39 trips - Mike Kavanaugh My father passed away in newfoundland, at age 84. It was his last trip and i think he knew. he saw all the friends and relatives alive and went to the socials and played cards and ate some pretty good feeds...and then..they laid him down, still smiling looking around, cousins , wife friends to send him off on another trip but i am sure his mother and father and sisters and brothers were there and they did not have to come so far to take him home again. i did'nt make it up in time to newfoundland to dance with my father one more time or hear the stories and the expressions and tell a joke to get him going but he cooked a grand feed before he left and gave me a hug down in the yard. i looked at him and he at me and i said dad i love you and he gave that amazed smile face and said i love you and we said good-bye for the last time.
