My Doll House

My Doll House

What a wonderful Christmas! What a wonderful memory! It was 1945. I was 7. All I could think of was the doll house I wanted for Christmas! I found out, years later, what a struggle that year had been for my folks. When I told my mom of my favourite Christmas, she replied, "Oh, if only your father had known. He was so saddened that year because he couldn'™t afford a 'decent'™ piece of wood." True to form, they came through with my wonderful gift. Pop built me my very own Newfoundland style salt box home out of a butter box and orange crate! Ma papered the walls with left over wallpaper from the bedroom. Oilcloth and carpet scraps cover the floors. My beloved doll house, now 71 years old is still in use. Built to last! My father Norman Gosse from Spaniards Bay, and my mother Winnifred Gosse (Best) from England, met in Montreal and raised my sister (Norma, deceased) and brother Garry, and me in Verdun, Quebec. I treasure my doll house and all the memories it holds for my children, nieces and nephews and more to come! It holds a special place in my living room, getting decked out for the seasons -- Christmas being a favourite! I wasn't born in Newfoundland, but it lives in my soul, and I treasure my memorable visits. Merry Christmas to all.   Submitted By: NULL
