My Daughter’s Copyhouse

Ah the copy house! I made one of those for my three girls in the corner of my backyard on Spruce Street in Pasadena. All the neighbours' kids used to come and play in it. The room was only six feet wide by six feet and the ceiling was just 5 feet high. So I put a second floor on it that had a ceiling at a 45 degree angle. Just a small ladder and hole in the ceiling of the first floor allowed the kids to get up there. I was quite pleased with how solid the place was and it even had a screen door that banged loudly every time it was shut. Over the years there was the occasional bird's nest and hornet's nest that found its way into the top floor and many a time I had to come out and deal with a spider that was met with howls of girlish protests. My daughter's grandmother Ellen provided the money for the lumber and I always appreciated that. I know my girls Tara, Kerri and Brenna have fond memories of their copyhouse that dad built. I used to drop in quite frequently for a make believe "cup of tea" so to speak and I bumped my head more than once! Those were the days, my friend! We thought they would surely never end! The little house lasted 20 years and when it was eventually torn down, I found my old lost hammer and a note I put in one of the corner concrete blocks. The note said, "Hello girls - love, Dad." My daughter Tara was good enough to send me this photo of her copyhouse.
