MY BELOVED NEWFOUNDLAND
I’m perched here on a rock
On a cliff in Newfoundland
And what I behold here
Is absolutely grand.
Grass waving like the sea waves,
Rippling to and fro,
Does so because it’s windy
And how that wind does blow!
The trees, likewise are bent
From the ever-blowing gust.
It’s like they’re trying to escape
But stand right there they must.
A bull moose now is grazing
Where a herd of caribou had crossed
But I don’t think he sees me;
In his feeding he’s engrossed.
The puffins on the rocks
That make this cliff their home,
Flutter, fly and chatter
As they move from stone to stone.
The cold Atlantic sea waves
Slap against the cliff
As the briny ocean air
I inhale to sniff.
In the foreground I see humpbacks,
Those ever-playful whales,
As they rise and splash and disappear
Then wave their massive tails.
Off into the distance
A parade of icebergs passes by,
Each berg a rugged float
So appealing to my eye.
Above the gulls are calling
Telling me I must stay home
In my beloved Newfoundland,
Nevermore to roam.
And as I focus on the light house
And my father’s fishing schooner,
They tell me that I’m here to stay
But that I should have come back sooner.
