My father, Baxter Beck celebrated his 86th birthday at his home in Swift Current on July 29th. My brother, Clyde and his wife Joy were home from Albeta and set the tone for the event by placing Christmas lights in the trees and on the fence in front of his house in preparation for the festivities. Local mummers thought it looked like Christmas and decided to pay Baxter a visit. Imagine the surprise when a knock came on the door and three mummers asked “any mummers allowed in?” Of course, they were invited in and the fun began, trying to guess who they were! The news reached far and wide since the photo of the mummers was posted on face book and Newfoundlanders as far away as Australia were joining in the entertainment of guessing who these people were. Most were surprised to learn that the mummers were three young ladies ages 76, 79 and 82. They were Hazel Stacey ( Joy’s older sister), Evelyn Eddy and Daphne Giles – long time friends of my Dad! There is nothing better for a party than to have mummers give it some life! They took time to have their photo done with the birthday boy. Their visit was the highlight of the day and a big surprise for everyone there. You gotta’ love the spirit of Newfoundlanders who keep up the traditions that otherwise might get forgotten. You never know when mummers can show up – sometimes even for birthdays in July if the setting is right.   Submitted By: Debbie Beck
