Memories of the Hindenburg
I remember the Hindenburg very well. I was six years old at the time and with my mother, Mary Kirby (nee Hollett), berry picking on Holletts Island, better known as Bradleys Island, just a few yards from where the Burin fish plant is now. (There was no fish plant there in 1936.) My mother and her family of seven brothers owned and lived on Holletts Island for 12 years, from 1912 to 1924, when they moved across the gut to the mainland. The fish plant area is the same place where two banking schooners were built in 1935, the Calvin Pauline and the Beatrice Vivian. I remember being over to the launching, as we lived just over the hill from that area. Back to the Hindenburg, we were scared of the large airship. It was so close we could see some of the people in the windows as it passed slowly by. It passed right over Pardys Island, which is just a few hundred yards south of Holletts Island. It was heading northeast at the time. Too bad we did not have a camera with us. Don’t think we got many berries, as were too eager to get in our dory and row the short distance home, not knowing what such a large airship might be up to and not expecting to see anything like it in our area at that time in history. I will never forget it. Submitted By: NULL
