Memories of a Winter Blizzard
A snowstorm is raging A real winter blast The snow will be deep I know it will last Our house is pitch black And all is quite still Through a strong wind is howling I can feel its chill I lie in my bed A warm rock at my feet To keep me warm And the shivers to beat On and on the storm rages It batters our house And rattles the windows That scares me the most I remain wide awake Unable to sleep For the sound of the storm Is relentless and deep I creep to my window To look outside But it is all frosted up And icy inside I blow with warm breath Against glass frosty white And make a hole to look out On this fierce winter night I see snow piled high In the shimmering light As it swirls and drifts What a ghostly sight! I return to my bed And at last fall asleep As the storm blusters on And does not cease Finally at daybreak I awake to calm The storm is over But its memory lingers on This poem is based on my memories of winter storms as I experienced them while growing up as a young boy on Stamps Lane in St. John's in the late 1940's.
