Married for 150 Years and Counting…
Thursday, September 11, 2008 My brother Eric Lethbridge and his wife Dorothy, my sister Rita Rose and her husband Stan from Scarborough, ON, along with myself, Ivan Lethbridge, and my wife Winnie were all married in 1958. To celebrate our 50th wedding anniversaries, we decided to visit McCallum, Hermitage Bay, the birthplace of our mother, Emma Lethbridge, nee Lee. We drove from St. John's to Hermitage and spent a relaxing evening and overnight with our cousin Amy Rose and her husband John. Their kindness and hospitality to us was overwhelming and we want to reciprocate our love and affection to them. John and Amy have lived in Ottawa for many years and since their retirement have spent their summers in Hermitage. For those who have never travelled in this area of unequalled beauty, you should plan a trip and take a ferry ride to some of the isolated communities. In McCallum we stayed in a rented cottage right on the harbour; Nina and David Crant were our hostess and host. A full, fresh dinner was provided, along with a special homemade anniversary cake. The fridge was well-stocked with all that we needed to have a hearty breakfast. Then we had a stroll on the boardwalk that covers the community and finally, we arrived at the cemetery. In the cemetery we found our grandmother's headstone and the headstones right back to our great-great-great-grandparents. Hats off to the graveyard committee for keeping the graveyard in excellent, accessible condition. In leaving McCallum, I uttered the famous words of General McArthur: "We shall return."
