Manderson’s Memories
Dear Sirs or Madams, I would like to say a word about Gander as an airport. Gander's airport provided airplanes to fly to England and to Europe as the shortest distance during World War II. I was stationed in different airports across Canada as an airman. I joined up as an airman in 1941. I studied as an air gunner to fly in different bombers, as a gunner. I have survived as a gunner, and today I am 91 years of age. I would like to say a word about an airman who was stationed in Gander Airport. His name is Monroe. He said to me that Gander Airport was the worst airport that an airman could be posted to. The weather was cold, windy, foggy and changing constantly. I am so happy I got posted out of Gander. I enjoyed your story, especially the story of the love the people had for the needs of the helpless people. What a truthful story. Keep up the excellent work you are providing in the Downhome magazine. May the Good Lord bless you. Sincerely, L. Roland Manderson Submitted By: NULL
