Enclosed please find a picture of Hugh Joseph MacDonald - a veteran of World War One.

Hugh Joseph MacDonald, born April 8, 1891, was a resident of Campbell's Creek. In 1916 he went to St. John's and enlisted in the Newfoundland Regiment on May 24 of that year. He was one of the soldiers who took part in Beaumont Hamel. He did not answer roll call the next morning because he had been wounded - gunshot in the right arm. He spent time in Wandsworth Hospital because of the wound. A second stay at the hospital was because of a whitlow on one of his fingers. He cut his finger trying to open a can of bully beef. It became infected and he was hospitalized for treatment.

Hugh Joseph MacDonald was discharged February 6, 1919 with being medically unfit. Upon returning home it was impossible to get employment with this discharge. He appealed it because records showed he had regained "€œfull power of his arm."   Submitted By: NULL
