I am writing you in the faint hope that you may, through your readers, be able to locate a friend for my mother and me. In 1964-65, my mother and I lived in a one-bedroom sitting room at 29 Gower Street in St. John’s, N.L. In the next room was a young woman named Faye Moss. Although Faye was probably four years older than me and some 15 years younger than my mom, they struck a friendship that lasted until she met a young military man from the United States, married and moved away. She had been in St. John’s to do a hairdressing course. Over the next several years, she and my mom wrote letters but never had the opportunity to see each other again. The world was certainly different then. I remember how sweet she was, how kind she was to my mom and me. Even though she was lonely at times, coming from a smaller community outside St. John’s (and I can’t remember where), and my mom was certainly having her own struggles, they would laugh and tell stories. I think she felt as though my mom were her older sister, and I felt like she was my older sister. I was going to a dance one time, probably my first dress-up dance, and I couldn’t afford a new dress. She said, “I have one I think could fit you,” so I wore her beautiful aqua dress. I can see that dress in my mind to this day, in detail. I felt like a princess. My mom and I talked of her so often over the years and were always going to try to find her. But life gets away with you sometimes and you put things off, and we never did pursue finding her. Unfortunately, my mom passed away three years ago, and some of our long talks we had as she lay sick in her bed was about how I would do what I could to find Faye and have that chat my mom and I always wanted to have with her. Faye Moss would be about 69-70 years old by now, and I did hear she had eventually moved back to Newfoundland. It would mean so much to me to be able to fulfill my promise to my mom and find her.
