L’Anse aux Meadows, 1972

My husband and I camped in Newfoundland in 1972 (our second visit 0 our first was in 1969). On this second visit we drove all the way up the peninsula, took the ferry over to Labrador and back, and then spent a night in St. Anthony. On our way back we stopped at L'Anse aux Meadows viking site (photo enclosed). A fisherman named George Decker greeted us there, and he (apparently) had made a handwritten map of the site. We saw several house sites covered with roofs for protection and a smithy along the old beach. Inside what had been the longhouse we saw the remains of the turf walls and charcoal pits in the "great hall." This is the best photo we have from our visit there. We saw L'Anse aux Meadows in its "primitive" stage of preservation, not too long after the Norwegian archaeologist Helge Ingstad had discovered it. We know that now the site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it must look quite different. We would love to go back and see how it looks today. But we now live in Minnesota (even farther from Newfoundland than when we made those trips from New Jersey) and we no longer camp. Sincerely, Peggy Roeske   Submitted By: NULL
