Labrador the Big Land
July 26, 2014 Dear Downhome: I just finished reading Ron Young’s most interesting article in the Aug 2014 issue of Downhome, entitled “Labrador: big in so many ways”. Thanks for focusing on the splendour of that great land. I was unaware that it had been up for sale at one time; so fortunate that didn’t happen. I must admit I knew very little about the North except through my readings of the poetry of Robert Service of whom I have always been big fan. I was also aware that a Cornick ancestor, Max Cornick, emigrated to Labrador City from St. John’s back in the early 1900s and established a successful business there, which his two sons now operate. In a way he was a pioneer in the Big Land. Also my Smith ancestors from Brigus were stationers at Cutthroat, Labrador in the early 1900s where they fished and had a room. As a matter of fact I was so fascinated by that story that I wrote a poem about them entitled “Labrador Fishery”, which I submitted to your website. I was so proud that you saw fit to include that poem in the Summer 2014 issue of “Inside Labrador”. I am probably one of your greatest fans and read every issue from cover to cover. Keep up the great work Sincerely John Cornick Halifax, Nova Scotia Submitted By: John Cornick
