Knights of Columbus Hostel Fire, 1942
Knights of Columbus Hostel Fire, 1942
The K of C hostel fire occurred on Harvey Road at the foot of Parade S.in St. John's on the night of Dec 12, 1942. It was a terribly cold night and fire hoses froze. This tragic suspicious wartime fire claimed 100 lives. We kids witnessed the blaze from our bedroom window on Merrymeeting Road at the top of Parade St. The photo shows the conflagration at it's height.
