Jocelyn Culnan Letter
It was my pleasure speaking with you December 13, 2010. Please find enclosed the picture I was speaking of. The lovely young lady on the left is my 85-year-old mother. Her name was Mary Dora Osborne. The year was 1943 or 1944. She was a cook at the Anglican Orphanage, located on Long Pond Road in St. John's, NL. Your article "Miracle at the Orphanage" enticed her to search for the enclosed picture. The picture was found, I had it enlarged, and now I am writing, asking you to publish (if possible) the picture in your wonderful magazine Downhome. My mother is very curious to know if any of her coworkers (the four ladies in the picture) are still alive, and would they possibly contact her? She remembers the name "Nellie" as one of them.
If you would be so kind to publish this picture, my mother would be delighted. Any individual with any information could contact Mary Dora Taylor (married name) at 3473 Claremont Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia, B3L 3L6. The phone number is 1-902-454-4487 (mine) or 1-902-454-9797 (hers). My email address is [email protected] .
My mother immigrated to Canada in 1945 (approx.), and married my beloved (deceased) father, Frank Taylor. She came to Nova Scotia on the ship called Burgeo. My mother was born in Frenchman's Cove, on the Burin Peninsula.
Mom and I delight in reading your magazine, but to see her own picture, and perhaps have contact with her previous coworkers, would be absolutely wonderful.
With great appreciation,
Jocelyn Culnan (Tayler)
God Bless Newfoundland!
