Jakeman Allgrade school was awarded a "Helping Hands" award from a national organization known as "Let Them be Kids" or LTBK! (www.ltbk.ca) They are a non-profit group that helps out with the costs of building playgrounds, skate board parks and fitness parks etc. This is a big award because so many people applied and only a few where chosen. I think our community was only a handful of communities chosen in NL out of 29 applications from this province. This is a 50/50 match grant that doubles our buying power! We are proud to say that Trout River will have a new playground built on September 25 of this year and on that same day, several other projects of a similar nature will be built across Canada! This build day will be webcast across the country! This is great news and from the turnout and response we got from our official announcement May 7th, we are pumped and can't wait to give the children of this community a playground they can play in, because as of now they have nothing!! Just click on the Canada map and move your cursor over the map leaf where Trout River is and this will also take you into the site and give you updates on the project, and it also tells the story of Trout River!! You will see links to a student's video on a song he sung about the playground with a twist on a Johnny Cash song! The kids get to pick the equipment through a "dotmocracy" method which will be held at the school on Thursday of next week! (Kids choose by putting dots on the equipment they like the most.) Also the playground will be built in honour of one or more fallen soldiers!! Look at the site!! It will inspire you and our hope is that our project will inspire many others to come together and make something out of nothing!! This is going to be like a good old barn raising! We hope we get many people registering onto our site and volunteering their time to help us on September 25 and be a part of something great that they will remember for ever! This is a follow up to a story you published about what our playground committee was trying to accomplish two years ago! It is great to see a light at the end of the tunnel! This couldn't come at better time due to the mudslides that occurred in the community last year that displaced six families!
