In Me Uncle Gerald’s Boat
A rhythm poem I wrote last summer after cod fishing with my 70-year-old father (Harold Chatman from Charlottetown).
In Me Uncle Gerald's Boat
He's a morning chap
I'm an evening girl
This bay was our
own little world
As I went...
Fishin' with me father in me Uncle Gerald's boat.
My PFD zipped
up to me chin
and me crotch strap
snapped up tight
As I went...
Fishin' with me father in me Uncle Gerald's boat.
My left hand clamped
to back of the seat
and my right hand
clamped to the front
As I went...
Fishin' with me father in me Uncle Gerald's boat.
White Point says I
Broad Cove says he
Platters Beach did I see
As I went...
Fishin' with me father in me Uncle Gerald's boat.
Let's try here he would say
and I dropped down me hook
Five jigs and no more
were too close to the shore
As I went...
Fishin' with me father in me Uncle Gerald's boat.
Stop in the middle of the bay
it's a nice day
Drop over the line
a fish in no time
As I went...
Fishin' with me father in me Uncle Gerald's boat.
Don't feel like much
must be a connor or such
oh it's harder to reel
I said with a squeal
Take ya time now says father
I thinks ya gother
As I went...
Fishin' with me father in me Uncle Gerald's boat.
It's the biggest I said
and he nodded his head
and made a smirk of a smile
The quota is 10
he said with a grin
As I went...
Fishin' with me father in me Uncle Gerald's boat.
One Rockcod, no squid
gulls fightin' overhead
When he decides to move again
Pull up yer line
we've got lots of time
As I went...
Fishin' with me father in me Uncle Gerald's boat.
Let's see what the other boats got,
we'll fish over there if it's alot.
As I went...
Fishin' with me father in me Uncle Gerald's boat.
Sure enough
we struck gold
And 12 fish filled the hole
Got enough he did shout
as two he threw out
As I went...
Fishin' with me father in me Uncle Gerald's boat.
We would of kept all the fish
from the law we would wish
for sure we would stay afloat.
If only we weren't...
in me Uncle Gerald's boat.
