His Lordship of the City Street – Illustrated
His Lordship of the Street pokes fun at the rules of garbage collection in St. John's & could be published any time of the year.
His Lordship of the City Street
I packed them up this morning,
And left them near the step,
No more than 14 bundles
Wrapped up 'gainst wind and wet.
I waited as he came to me,
Anticipating dread.
Would he choose to take my gifts?
I feared not think ahead.
I heard him coming down the street;
He took his own sweet time.
He stood above me like a king;
I was cowering in the grime.
He thought he’d stop by my doorstep.
My heart, it took a leap!
Would he deem to stoop so low?
Or would I be left to weep?
He stepped down from his chariot,
This Prince of Hope and Power.
Would he accept my precious gift
On this Friday morning hour?
He took the wrapper off my gifts,
With satisfaction gave a smile.
He tossed my bundles in the back.
I could have danced a mile!
His Lordship of the City Street
Went on his great, grand way...
He took with him my hopes and fears.
For it’s St. John’s Garbage Day!
