A Poem for Private John Healey
Regiment # 166

Dad, I never ever told you over all the years
How very proud I am of you whom I hold so dear.
You enlisted in the Army and left during the month of May
The year was 1940 which was on Mother’s Day.
You went with other soldiers who wanted to lend a hand
Not knowing what lay beyond in a strange, faraway land.
You came to the end of your journey which brought you on
English shores
Not realizing that peace for some years will be no more.
I know that you must have been nervous like your fellowmen
Wondering if you’ll ever see your family and home again.
The days turned into weeks, the months into years
As the sounds of those guns were coming fast and near.
You drove your truck slowly as you crept into the night
So not to warn the enemy the reason for no lights.
There were many times you didn’t sleep because of the
cold and rain
Which caused you all to shiver wishing for heat again.
You could tell by your comrades’ faces their thoughts
were of home and peace
Hoping for the time the war would finally cease.
You came home from Europe with memories to stay
Tuck safely within your head of those tiring days.
We, your children want you to know how proud we
are to be
Of how you fought for our country in helping to keep
it free.
