Harbour Grace: Trans Atlantic Air Legacy The long distinguished history of Harbour Grace in the parade of transatlantic flights from 1927 to 1936 is well documented. In a book entitled “The Challenge of the Atlantic’, (Robinson-Blackmore 1983), the authors, Bill Parsons and Bill Bowman describe details of some 20 of these flights from 1927 to 1936. It establishes Hr. Grace as the most famous starting off point for pioneer transatlantic fights including the most famous one of Amelia Earhart, the first woman to solo across the Atlantic, in her monoplane “Friendship.” The flight starting on May 20, 1932 lasted almost 15 hours, ending in Culmors, Northern Ireland.
