Harbour Buffett

I thought your readers might like to have the enclosed digital copy of a photograph found in my late aunt Jean (Morry) Funkhouser’s collection of photos. Her husband, Jack, was a Quartermaster in the US Navy based at Argentia during the war and this photo was undoubtedly taken by him or one of his mates on one of their regular provisioning flights from Argentia to Gander. I could not identify the location of this harbour and assumed it was on the southern shore somewhere until Steve Barnable at the Crown Lands Mapping Division and the staff at the Aerial Photo Library there corrected me and confirmed that it is indeed Harbour Buffett prior to resettlement. The church and the little island nearby are telltale landmarks and will be familiar to former residents as well as their descendants. The Maritime History Archive at MUN has a photo of Harbour Buffet taken in 1907 that also helps to confirm this identification.

I have sent a copy to The Rooms but thought that the Downhome magazine distribution will ensure that more of the former residents and their descendants are able to see it.
