Great Whales
From the ancient mist of time
Comes this story - comes this rhyme
On that fifth and wondrous day
God's great whales came to stay
100 million years - before the time of man
The giant whale - in the ocean swam
Long before the dinosaur - long before the land
Long before most creatures - put by maker's hand
Pangaea - first land - rose to be
All the whales came to see
Far beneath the milky way
Oh such splendour on that day
The biggest brain that's ever been
Remember well the sights they've seen
When the first bird took to sing
When the first bird took to wing
So the whales sing their song
Under water all day long
Giant humpback with its might
Leaps from ocean - tries for flight
Fossil search but gives us clues
Of the history of great blues
Giant squid up from the deep
Ancient sperm whales secrets keep
Eons pass but they recall
When birds retreated in the fall
So the whale - migrates in the time
Ancient passage - so sublime
On that old and timeless day
Heavenly Father came to say
All my creatures; great and small
Whales my favourite; one of all
My image man to share the sight
I'll put on earth -at first light
This ancient man - but stood in awe
At the breaching that he saw
Man goes forth across the land
His dominion well in hand
But he often looks from shore
With an urge; he can't ignore
Then the man is truly free
Out from land he goes to see
From New Bedford he sets sail
Searching for the mighty whale
Harpoon lances they impale
In the blubber of the whale
Ambergris and corset bone
Take the whale from his home
Oh thy purpose we betray
When great whales we come to slay
Oh the madness of the chase
What our hope for human race
At long last a whaling ban
But many fish stocks caught by man
All about the seven seas
God's great whales are brought to knees
Then for mankind's final trick
Garbage, waste and oil slick
Starving, sick they run aground
For a final look around
Jonah, Ahab came to know
From the whale - the seeds they sow
Oh great shroud and ancient sea
I know in time - it waits for me
God looks down from Pearly Gate
Poor Mother Earth - the hour is late
If man can't keep my whales free
Little hope I have for thee
