I almost had a GREAT picture to send you, but due to the hazardous conditions of standing on a very busy street in Chicago, the pictures I had taken aren't too great. I am sending them to you for another reason.
My granddaughter is doing a presentation on the people and life in Newfoundland for her senior class project in college. She has always been fascinated with Newfoundland from the stories I have told her of my childhood years growing up in Dunville. She received a grant last year to travel to Newfoundland and do some research, take pictures and interview some of the residents. She spent a week with her cousin Lorraine Parsons and family in Goulds and in Dunville with my brothers, Dick and John Power, and their families. She loved Newfoundland so much and came back to Illinois with so many souvenirs from the Downhome Shoppe and loads of Great Big Sea CDs.
She found out that the group was coming to Chicago for a concert February 2nd, which happened to be her 23rd birthday. We got tickets and went downtown to the concert. This is where I tried to get a picture of me standing by their bus, but the vehicles speeding by didn't co-operate. I am sending copies of the pictures anyway.
Great Big Sea's concert was EXCELLENT! It was sold out and the audience was on their feet for the entire time. I wore my Newfoundland shirt hoping to meet a fellow Newfoundlander in the crowd. People kept coming up for me asking if I was from Newfoundland and when I said, "Yes," I asked them the same question. I didn't meet a soul from Newfoundland, only people from Alabama, Texas, Florida, etc. who knew someone who once went to Newfoundland, or heard about Newfoundland's help on 9-11. They were so impressed with the island and its people. It was such a proud time for me to answer their questions as best I could and tell them about growing up there.
Great Big Sea are such wonderful ambassadors for Newfoundland. The audience loved them and everybody was singing along with them. It was one of the best concerts I have ever attended.   Submitted By: NULL
