The Matthew left Bristol, England in fourteen ninety-seven
They were searching for new land
John Cabot discovered God's country
And he called it Newfoundland

The date was May the second, fourteen ninety-seven
John Cabot with his crew of eighteen men
Set sail in that small vessel
To find a new world, then not known to them

Not knowing the seven week voyage
After fifty-four days sailing that rough sea
On June the twenty-forth, they sighted Cape Bonavista
What a magnificent sight it must have been
For these courageous men to see

Marconi received the first wireless signal on December 12, 1901
On Cabot Tower, Signal Hill
So many historic events has taken place here
But it is God's country
It's all in accordance to His will

On June, the fourteenth, the year nineteen nineteen
From Lester's Field, St. John's, Newfoundland
Alcock and Brown made the first nonstop flight to Europe
All these wonderful events happened here
In God's Country, Newfoundland

On the fourteenth day of August, nineteen forty-one
From the harbour of Argentia, Newfoundland
Roosevelt and Churchill signed the Atlantic Charter
the declaration of peace
Placentia was the former French capital of Newfoundland

Five hundred years later nineteen ninety-seven
People from all over the world came to celebrate that anniversary day
Such celebrations Newfoundland before had never seen
Many thousands of people, dignitaries, world leaders
With Prince Philip and her Majesty the Queen

On this historic year nineteen ninety-seven
History repeats itself again
Five hundred years on this very day
The exact replica of the vessel, Matthew
Lands again in Bonavista Bay

The Matthew dropped Anchor in seventeen different ports of call
Greeted by dignitaries with pageantry and welcome
Everything so perfect unique and grand

Thank you John Cabot, you made us so happy
That we live in God's country, you named Newfoundland
