Garden Party In Renews (1966)

Car Pictured is Similiar to the One in the Story.

A little Yarn told to me on a recent visit to Trepassey by my friend Wish.

When Wish was a Teen he often did some Chores for Uncle Dick and his Brother Gus while they worked at the Fish Plant Chores included Cooking and House Cleaning.A Home Care Worker or maybe a Butler!
Uncle Dick had a 1963 Plymouth Valiant Car.Considered Mid Size for the time.
News came round by word of mouth. Not many Phones back in 66 on The Shore.
There was a Garden Party in Renews.
Wish asked Uncle Dick if He and SevenĀ  friends could hire Him to take them to The Garden Party.Never one to turn down a Chance for a Drop of Liquor, some Gas Money and away they go to Renews on a Foggy,Sultry Summer’s Sunday Night.
Thirty five miles of a Long and winding Rocky Gravel Road.Dick and The Trepassey Flyer’s cruised along atĀ  a Snail’ s pace in Pea Soup Foggy Conditions.
Now Dick was known to be a Cool Dude even before the word Cool became fashionable.A good Driver for the Lads hell bent on kicking up there heels with the Renews Girls in The Lancers.
Uncle Dick was concerned with the Car being a tad overweight and the tires were Old.
As they entered Renews and the last Steep Hill before their destination.Wish riding up front thought he felt a flat tire on the Front Passenger side.Dick was not so sure.He slowed down and let his passengers know that everything was under control and no need to worry.Pulled over and did a walk around tire Check.Three tires were good and one Dick felt could use a bit more Rubber and it was very Flat.In no time they were back on the Road again.
Electricity was still fairly new on the Shore. So it was good to be able to see across the Hall and nobody had to hold a Lantern. You could bring your own Booze. But it had to be consumed out behind the Hall.A small Building,Packed to the Rafters.Smell of Cigarette Smoke,Johnny Walker Scotch, Old Spice and Aqua Velva were the Men’s Cologne and the Women put a dab of scent behind their Ears.Women wore dresses down past their knees and the Men all wore Suits and Ties.Jackets were left on the Chairs and Stools as they Planked er down to a Half set played by a Woman from Cappahayden on a Hohner Button Accordion.Wish left the Story at the Flat Tire Part.So I felt Obliged to put the finishing touches on it. All in All.A Good Time was had by All.Garden Parties helped Bond The Communities in those days.No Flats were reported on the Return Trip to Trepassey.Dick was probably the first Uber Driver in Trepassey or Was it a Hubert Driver? Nine people in a Valiant on a Gravel Road for 35 miles. That is the part that caught my Eye.
