Forever An Island Son
Aged family obelisk in our village cove grave yard,
Chiseled of voice and soul forever silent,
Scarcely a name, rank, where missed, inscribed;
Of a vanished hero who lies not with our Island
Four score and more, your folks here long buried
But you forever gone to distant Monchy’s field;
No dusty war bones under this mossy stone
Yours under foreign soil, lost, eternally sealed
Another time, past century, of different values
A trek to the big town to sign up one day,
For adventure your young years you feigned
To fight in France and Suvla Bay
But know this my distant folk
Your brother to his son, he proudly gave your name;
No family you, too young in truth to fight
My grandfather, your name, to his son he did the same
And fight for truth, freedom, gave all, you did
To you, your fighting brethren bestowed ‘The Royal’
Proud today, those who wear the northern antlered deer
Though you remain ever lost under distant soil
