This article and picture are of my grandfather Thomas Ford (sitting). The other soldier (I believe from a Scottish Regiment) was killed in the war. Name unknown. Thomas William Ford October 28, 1888 - October 9, 1966 Thomas William Ford was born on October 28, 1888 in the small community of Jackson's Arm, N.L. where he lived most of his life. In August 1915, at 27, Thomas joined the army. He served with "C" company of the 28th Division of the Newfoundland Regiment in World War One, for four and a half years. He served in England, France and Germany to name a few. After being wounded several times with shrapnel and shell shock he landed in a hospital in Glasgow, Scotland. While he was there a nurse told him there was another soldier with the last name as his. He asked her what his name was and when it came to be, it was his brother Simeon. During their stay at the hospital the nurses moved their beds side by side. After spending many months together his brother was honourably discharged and returned home to Jackson's Arm. Thomas returned to active duty and while at the Battle of Gallipoli he met and shook hands with a young soldier, who admired his boots and actually wanted to exchange with him, but Thomas said his boots were too comfortable and decided to keep them. Little did he know at the time that it was Prince Edward who spoke with him. He was only 19. Thomas continued on with his unit after the war ended to complete post war duties.< After the war Thomas worked as a general labourer and mail carrier. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 3 Deer Lake for many years. Thomas was married to Elsie Combden. They have 11 children, 40 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren. His grandson and granddaughter are currently serving with the Canadian Armed Forces. He passed on October 9, 1966 at the age of 78 years.   Submitted By: NULL
