Fond Memories of Yesteryear
Dear Ron; I just received my November 2014 edition of Downhome and your article, "€œThank You Lucy."€ Reading it caused me to recall my early and pleasant association with you and your popular magazine back in the summer of 1988 in Brampton, Ontario. We were appointed the Corps Officers (clergy) at The Salvation Army Corps. It was a Saturday afternoon when a knock came on our door and I answered it. You were standing outside. You were very gracious and introduced yourself. "€œI am Ron Young and I live here in Brampton. We are endeavouring to publish a magazine called The Downhomer. I know you have a number of Newfoundlanders attending your Corps and I am calling to see if you would kindly give me permission to put 20 or so of our magazine in your corps to see if your people would be interested in them. It would only be for a short while." You must have impressed me because I gave you a "€œyes"€ without knowing anything about you our your magazine, and without permission from my leaders at the corps. You did [deliver some magazines] and one month later I telephoned you to request you "send no more"€ to us. You see, my people would come Sunday morning and ask if The Downomer had arrived, at the expense of taking our own Salvation Army magazine, The War Cry. Lots of things have happened since then. We had a wonderful ministry of over 40 years of active service in The Army. Ten years ago we retired from Brampton (our second time around) and are now happily enjoying our home in Guelph, Ontario. We are still only one hour'€™s drive from Brampton and just 45 minutes away from our family. We just celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary and, by the way, we still get Downhome! On two separate occasions my wife and I did appear in the Downhome. And a distant cousin of mine, Clyde Paddle, used to make his own contribution in those early days. Thanks for the memories!
