This is Charity Cole, age 10, from Eastern Passage, NS. Charity was visiting Glenwood during the month of April 2012. She was spending time with her Great-Nanny Wheaton, age 85, who she hadn't seen in three years. Great-Nanny is Mrs. Alberta Wheaton.

Charity was playing many different songs for Great-Nanny. Great-Nan got up, went to our bedroom, came out with her accordion in one hand and her walking cane in the other. Charity didn't know what it was. Great-Nan explained the history of the accordion and its importance to Newfoundland. How it is used in the traditional kitchen parties (although Great-Nanny never took part in parties).

Great-Nan can't read music, so she "picks" it up by ear. Charity was playing "Amazing Grace" on the fiddle, and Great-Nanny was playing along with Charity. The young teaching the old, and the old teaching the young Newfoundland history.

Little did they know I was taking pictures, videotaping and enjoying every moment of this special time together with tears in my eyes. This picture is precious for my daughter, Charity, to have. Charity now has the memory of playing music with her 85-year-old Great-Nanny Wheaton, learning Newfoundland history and having a good ol' time! Great-Nanny is listening very carefully here, trying to pick up the tune. This picture clearly shows what Newfoundland lifestyle is: Family, generations, music, good times and precious memories.
