A few summers ago, during a business trip to Gander, I found myself with a few spare hours to spend. I was curious to learn more about the Silent Witness Memorial, and ventured down to the site.
I was immediately and twofold moved by what I experienced in my 30-minute visit. Firstly, by the sheer tranquil beauty of the area, and, secondly, by the unmistakable feeling that I was not alone.
Later that evening, in my hotel room, I had penned a few lines in hopes of capturing the essence of that unforgettable tragedy in 1985.
The Arrow Air disaster has since been the topic of much sabotage discussion, the subject of a number of books, and has been made into a film.
I had hoped simply to remember the heroes of the flight, many of whom were returning from a peacekeeping mission, and to share with some readers the wonder and loveliness of the Memorial.

Fallen Angels

Tiny broken teddy bear upon the scarlet snow,
A symbol of the ruin in the dawn.
Icy arctic northern
Fans the flaming pyre;
How December's lost her wintry charm.

Mournful mother wonders still; no words to quell the tears;
So many gather near yet she's alone.
Enduring one more day
To languish silently;
Waiting for the son who won't come home.

I've seen the Cross of Sacrifice; mighty, forged in steel;
An emblem proudly reaching to the sky.
Beneath the shadow cast -
We know they are at peace;
Sacred soil where fallen angels lie.

Fragrance from the flowers scented lingers in the breeze,
Then spills across the grass to Gander Lake.
Elusive, as the truth;
Not fully understood,
Mystifies again this tranquil place.

I've touched the Cross of Sacrifice; felt within my soul
A spectral sense of someone passing near.
And though they may be gone,
Eternally they'll be
