Thirty-three young Soccer players from Labrador completed a Soccer trip of a lifetime in early September as the Happy Valley-Goose Bay Minor Soccer Association embarked on its first team tour of England. The boys team, sponsored by Subway, and the girls team, sponsored by Lewis Concrete Forming, accompanied by a six-person management team and 22 parents left Goose Bay on September 11th to fly to Gatwick airport, London, arriving in the wee hours of the morning. Under the guidance of an English Professional team, Leicester City Football Club, UK and local association members were able to put together a week-long package which included: Air travel and ground travel, accommodations and meals, tickets to three professional games hosted by Sheffield United (versus Coventry), Leicester City (versus Millwall) and Stoke City (versus Everton). Our teams played two games against local club and school opposition. They were coached by professional staff and visited a professional Football Academy to watch U10 and U16 players train. One of the many highlights of the trip was the invitation to be guests of honor at the Leicester City versus Millwall game, in which our players were invited to take penalty shots at half time in front of twenty-three thousand spectators. In between all the Football action, the players and parents were able to enjoy a day at Alton Towers Theme Park, a Kareoke night, Ten Pin Bowling, visits to numerous restaurants, shopping centers and, finally, a day in London where the group enjoyed an open bus tour of London, a tour of Wembley Football Stadium and a night at the theater to watch the musical, Queen’s “We Will Rock You.” The teams arrived back in Canada on September 18th. As the photograph outside of Buckingham Palace shows... the players always looked sharp in their Red and White Canadian jackets. The management team was blessed with a group of young Labradorians that were a pillar of disciplined, respectful youth that made us proud throughout the seven-day adventure. To the parents who supported the players, the staff and the idea, and to the business community and the residents of Happy Valley-Goose Bay who supported our fund raising program.
