Earthly Deeds
Earthly Deeds
And why in this unfettered way
Do we take arms to slay
And both with word and deed so foul
Lay low mankind this way.
As if mere dust beneath our feet.
And no concern in mind
We blindly lash our fellow man
No thought for kindred kind
How many souls will have to pass
From earth’s far fields of gladness bright
E’re we can see the naked truth
That life is but a passing light
With deeds of love from man to man
Then nothing matters but memories dear
Garnered through the passing years
Summoned in sadness and ultimate fear
There is no promise after death
No far flung destination bright
We live our lives both bright and stark
Only our deeds remain as light
To mark our path through fettered life
A journey travelled from bend to bend
With endless joy and sorrow wrought
Life fully lived from start to end.
