Early Aquaculture Disease Diagnosis in NL NL
Early Aquaculture Disease Diagnosis in NL

Back in early 2000 I worked with the Dept Fisheries and Oceans as manager of a fish disease diagnostic lab located in Halifax, NS, devoted to assisting the developing aquaculture industry in the Atlantic Region. We had a staff of five at the lab, composed of Bacteriologists, Virologists and technicians working on problems in all four provinces. Some of our work took us to NL during the early formative years of salmon and trout culture development there. It was particularly rewarding for me, as I am a native of that province and started my career there. Those were exciting times. The photo shows Bacteriologist Sandy Campbell, one of the diagnosticians on our staff, culturing an Atlantic salmon for fish pathogens. Such diagnoses enabled growers to better treat diseases early as they occurred, and thus reduce losses.

John Cornick
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Submitted By: John Cornick
