Durrell III – Summer 2007
I enjoyed the little article you wrote about us (the 2 Grannies) in the November 2006 issue of the Downhome. I absolutely love your magazine and have subscribed to it for a few years now.
My friend Dianne and I (the 2 Grannies) have now driven in Dianne's motorhome to and from Newfoundland from Boundary Bay in Delta, BC four times! It was great fun to see your motorhome approaching along the street as we were waving from Margaret Manuel's front lawn, and such a privilege to receive your wonderful book full of the picturesque Newfoundland vocabulary!
This past summer of 2007, once we had driven once again across our beautiful country, we spent 5 weeks in the Twillingate area visiting our friends in Frenchman's Cove, Bay of Islands. During our previous visits we have driven all over your incredible province, enjoying and absorbing everything we saw and experienced.
As we left Newfoundland in August, 2007, our friends in Frenchman's Cove, Bay of Islands, had us screeched in - what a privilege to finally become honourary Newfoundlanders! I have included a photo of our being screeched in.
In addition to our driving holidays to Newfoundland, Dianne and I flew to Twillingate to enjoy three weeks over Christmas, 2006. We even had fun dressing up as mummers to help entertain some of the Twillingate long-term care residents. We absolutely love the culture and the whole environment that we have experienced in Newfoundland over our total of five visits. Definitely for us the cornerstones are the "downhome" and friendly people, the beautiful scenery, the food and the art and music. We thoroughly enjoyed being amongst the warm and welcoming people, and participating in the vibrant and happy house parties that included delicious food plus accordions, guitars, drums and spoons. For me, the mortar that oozes in between these cornerstones in the beautiful and harmonious singing of your very own multi-talented "Split Peas." The sish and slob around the little coves and inlets were delightful and completed the whole wonderful winter experience.
Newfoundland and all that it represents is an unforgettable and precious experience.
P.S. I also enjoyed the "Funky Puffin" Cranberry Wine!
