Dreaming of Newfoundland
Eight months ago, we sold most of our material possessions and moved back home with our personal belongings into a furnished bed and breakfast inn on the Eastport Peninsula. We have never operated a bed and breakfast before but I have a background in technology sales and marketing and would handle the tech and social side of the business while my husband is a restorator and would do all the modernization work. He is also the cook and I like to bake. It is a perfect BnB marriage! Our first guests arrived on May long weekend, from Poland to St. John's, on a 46 foot sailboat, and they drove out to see our sandy beaches and rugged coastlines with their local tour guide, a retired hydro engineer (one of few worldwide). One of our last guests during our first season was Anthony, a Forensic Data Analyst with the Boston Police Department. He is a cancer survivor. It was Fall 2022 and we took Anthony on several hikes in the area and he shared his story with us. We took great care in providing Anthony with unique cultural experiences that he would never forget. He is planning to return this Fall with his new wife. We decided to stay open year round to offer Winter activities that we also enjoy like snowshoeing and ice-fishing. We realized after eight months that this is where we are meant to be. We are care-givers like most Newfoundlanders who still often forget to lock their doors and who are always eager to share their home baked goodies over a cup of hot tea, or are quick to shovel their neighbours' driveway. My hometown is Robert's Arm and my husband is from Stephenville. We have agreed to take a week off each season to travel our majestic island and act like tourists. We don't miss the stress of living in a big city and we love living on the Eastport Peninsula. I can't wait to meet the couple who just booked us from Normandy France for June, and I'm equally excited to host another 50th Anniversary this summer for a lovely local couple. We renamed our inn Feather and Finn Bed and Breakfast. So far, we have maintained a 5.0 rating across all social platforms and our goal is to keep that trend in 2023!
