We are not Newfoundlanders (Rudi is from Saskatchewan and Lee is from Kansas), but we lived on New World Island for three years (1968-1971) as teachers, and were made to feel much at home there. We have returned many times and we are regular subscribers to Downhome.nIn November 2011 we joined a tour to Israel. We also crossed into Jordan to see the magnificent city of Petra. It is carved in the rose-coloured sandstone wall of huge cliffs. Petra was originally inhabited by the Nabateans over 2000 years ago. Roman and Byzantine culture can also be seen in the architecture. Because of changing trade routes and several terrifying earthquakes, Petra was completely abandoned by 1189 AD. Even the location of Petra was forgotten until 1812 when a Swiss explorer rediscovered it. We walked the 2 1/2 miles into this city, whose structures were carved out of the red stone walls. Rides by camel, horse or carts were also available. This tour was one of many that we really enjoined on our 12-day trip. God Bless.   Submitted By: NULL
