Some of the things I love about Downhome: The one special thing that I loved was my mother's Sunday dinner, all vegetables boiled in a large boiler with peas pudding and usually a wild bird baked in the oven. Later year's roast of beef. Skating on Ship Cove Lake after dark. Using an axe to chop a hole through the ice trying to catch a trout. Lying in the tall summer grass watching a "lark" flying to and fro with food for her young. Sitting outside on a nice warm summer Sunday morning listening to older men and retired fishermen trading stories and adventures. Fishing with Dad on a dark foggy early morning and a whale surfaces to blow about 40 ft. away, "eerie." Free to roam the countryside to pick blueberries, partridgeberries, etc. In early days free to hook a lobster or two, for the pot of hot boiling water. Cooking live winkles on open fire on the beach. On a Sunday watch capelin rolling on a sandy beach. As the song goes, there will always be a chair at the table for you there. Will share what they have with any man, etc. Watching older men build wooden boats with no power tools, a real art.
