Downhome

Someday, sometime, in future years
some old Downhomers will be found
Dust covered, in an attic where
for years they had lain all around

Where they were stored by someone who
thought they might be of interest to
Someone who later would come by
and pick them up and scan them through

What will someone in future time
think when they pick them up and look
What treasures will they find and see
when they leaf through these little books

There will be stories, pictures too
that will help them to reminisce
What treasures from the past they'll find
and memories, the very best

They'll find those little cultural things
from back in their grandfather's day
When life was different, simpler too
for all who lived around the bays

And pictures of long years gone by
of people in the coves and bays
Of places now no longer here
for folks have long since moved away

And of the ones who never left
who once had toiled on land and sea
Those generations in this place
they'll see white marble through the trees

They'll see places with old layer fence
where once potatoes would be sown
The rails and layers now grey and old
the garden headlands, overgrown

They'll read about those other times
they'll see in pictures days gone by
That may revive some memories
and maybe cause a smile or sigh

Yes, the Downhome in years to come
will be a treasure to be sure
For those who stop to pick it up
what memories will be in store.
