Don’t Cut Your Friend’s Hair!
My Hair Cutting Experience as a Kid came from watching my Dad Shear a Sheep.
He would put it between his Legs and that Lamb would be looking like a Million Bucks in no time.
One Summer’s Day my Uncle Vince came from across the Harbour in his Punt and he had with him
a Hair Clippers in a BlackĀ Cardboard Box which He hid underneath The Old Store on The Beach.
Not long afterwards I procured that Clippers and my friends Tom and Pat were visiting our
Place with their Mom.Their Mom was good friends with my Mom.
We had a Meadow up above our House that Father used to Mow for to feed the Sheep.
We were having a good time running around playing Chase and the Boys were a Couple of Years
Younger than Me and I could Outrun them.
Cornered One Brother and he put up a Struggle.Only got a Couple of Gaps out of his Hair.
Then the same with his Brother.Their Mom knew how to Cut Hair and She had to give them both a Brush Cut.
Anytime after I would go near their House to Play.Their Mom promply called them in.I was not Punished by my Parents that I recall.I think they figured that I realized what I did was not Cool and it tarnished my Relationship with that Family.
Karma hit me in the Mid Nineties when Lola my Wife had some Navy Wives over for Coffee and they were talking about
all of them cutting their Sailor Husband’s Hair. Now I knew that back then The Navy was Strict about Proper Navy Haircuts and I usually had a Haircut twice a month. There were more of them than me and they sweet Talked me into
letting Lola Cut my Hair with some pointers from the Whole Gang.Mushroom Cuts were popular and Lola practiced on our Son who was about 5 at the Time.Well Mushroom Cut I received.Looked like One of the Three Stooges.Look like She used a Bowl on my Head.I was Tanned from being at Sea and doing Upper Deck Waches. So when she shaved my head up the sides. It was almost White.Next Day when I turned up at work on the Minesweeper.”O’Brien who Cut Your Hair”? Then during my watch some Photos of a Proper Navy Haircut were Posted on the Main Notice Board.Surprised they did not Post my Wanted Photo beside it.Did not have to as we were only a Crew of Fifteen.Needless to Say Lola has not Cut my Hair since.Leave it to the Pros and Kids don’t cut your friends Hair.It is not Cool.
