Devil’s Cave – Back of the Cave

The Devil's Cave, located at Carbonear North, is located around 200 feet up in a cliff as you leave Carbonear heading toward Victoria. As children, we would ignore our parents in the summer, and on our way down toward Lilly Pond we would climb up to the cave and mark our names and the date into the rock. But in later years, the younger generations would us paint to write their names. This would cover up the names that were previously carved and marked there. Some of the names date back to 1899. The Devil's Cave got its name hundreds of years ago. The parents would warn the children not to go up to that cave, as it belongs to the devil, and he will take you. The cave is about eight feet deep and six feet square. Many names are painted on the rocks outside the cave, as you can see. I took this picture, as I thought for anyone who saw it, it would bring back memories. They may even see their own names there. Hope this can be of interest to some people.

Not very many people know where the cave is, and the younger generation knows nothing about it.   Submitted By: NULL
