Cow Crisis In Change Islands
Dear Downhome: There is one thing I look forward to each month, and that is the Downhome magazine. I grew up in Newfoundland (Change Islands, N.D. Bay). I live my childhood days over and over with many memories. I don't expect I will get back to the island again, as I am getting along in years, and am settled in a senior's home; it is very comfortable, and the folks that look after the place are wonderful. I recall my childhood days living in Change Islands before the roads were paved; no telephone; no electricity; most of the traffic consisted of sheep, cows and horses; but lots of boats. One night I walked up the road; it was very dark - the moon didn't seem to be out, and I had no flashlight. I knew the road well, but suddenly I fell over something. It was a cow, lying in the road; fortunately, it was a tame cow. Who was more frightened, I do not know - the cow or me. I keep in touch with friends still there. My friends here look at the magazine and ask me, "What's that?" It could be lobster traps, dried codfish, the flakes. How did I get here? When I was 18, I joined the Air Force and was posted in Lachine, Quebec. There I met a man when he came back from overseas. After a few years, we were married; however, I am a widow now. Wishing you the way for the future magazines. Sincerely, Ruth Banter Submitted By: NULL
