Corner Brook’s Skyscraper :)
The Sir Richard Squires Building: Corner Brook’s Very Own Skyscraper (Kind Of)
Standing tall in Corner Brook—really tall by our standards—is the one and only Sir Richard Squires Building. It might not rival the CN Tower or cast shadows like the high-rises of St. John’s, but around here, it’s a proper skyscraper. Ten storeys of provincial power, paperwork, and peak local pride.
Named after Newfoundland’s former Prime Minister, Sir Richard Squires, the building was opened in the 1980s as a central hub for government services on the west coast. Need to renew a license, apply for permits, or get through some red tape? Chances are, you're heading up the elevator here.
But beyond bureaucracy, the Squires Building has become a bit of a local legend. It’s the tallest building in town, after all—and whether you're driving in from the TCH or flying a drone over the Humber Arm, its boxy silhouette always stands out.
Tourists might pass it by without a second glance, but for Corner Brookers, it’s our very own concrete monument. It might not sparkle, it might not have fancy architecture, but it does one thing no other building in town can: look down on everything else.
Call it what you want, but out here, the Squires Building scrapes the sky just enough to make us proud.
