Enclosed please find a photo of my father John Arthur Bennett Clarke of Twillingate, NL. When Britain asked Newfoundland for wood workers in 1939 due to their reputation of being woodsmen, my father, like many other Newfoundlanders, volunteered for the British Forestry. After a few years in the Forestry he joined the Royal Navy in early 1942 and remained for the duration of the Second World War. He took his discharge from the Royal Navy in early 1946 and returned home to Newfoundland.

During his wartime experiences he served in several theatres of war and he was the recipient of the following medals:

Newfoundland Volunteer Medal
The 1939-1945 Star and Medal
The Atlantic Star and Medal
The Burma Star

He served on the following warships:

HMS Reading – Destroyer – North Atlantic Theatre
HMS Begum – Aircraft Carrier – Burma Theatre – operating out of Colombo, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka)
HMS Ameer – Escort Aircraft Carrier
HMS Slinger – Escort Aircraft Carrier
