Churchill Falls, Quebec Rises
Sept. 4, 2011 Re: Letter, page 10 of Sept. issue, "What's Wrong With Quebec?" & your reply re: Churchill Falls, Labrador. My late husband was mechanical superintendent on that project in the early '70s. When it was time to recruit tradesmen, he naturally made arrangements to recruit in St. John's, since it belonged to Newfoundland. However, his boss from Quebec put a stop to it and made him go to Montreal and recruit. Newfoundlanders were relegated to work in "off-site jobs" with supply companies. This I know, as I worked for one. There was nothing fair about it. I sure hope the same won't happen if the Lower Churchill goes ahead. I realize that it was a big investment and Quebec wanted a good share, but Newfoundland was treated "rotten" - after all, it was their land. It was a great project and the first time I went underground to see the "gleaming powerhouse" I was just thrilling to be a small part of it. Submitted By: NULL
