Christmas Long Ago

Christmas many years ago,
I remember it so,
There were no flashing Christmas lights,
But always lots of snow.

On Christmas Eve, we hung our stockings,
Hoping Santa would not pass by,
That he would bring lots of candies,
Or maybe just a little toy.

In the corner of the kitchen,
A little tree sat on a shelf,
Not many fancy decorations,
Just paper ones I made myself.

Although we had very little money,
We were happy as could be,
Christmas was a time for sharing,
With our friends and family.

A time for mummering each night,
Going from door to door,
Dressed in all sorts of funny costumes,
No one ever saw before.

Time to go to church on Sunday,
Those Christmas carols for to sing,
To celebrate the birthday,
Of Christ, our newborn King.

Let's celebrate the true meaning of Christmas,
And remember the baby that lay,
In Bethlehem in a manger,
