Chief of Defence Staff in ’93
Back in ‘93 when Admiral John Anderson was Chief of Defence, he had a short visit to Newfoundland. They had Saturday off, so the Admiral and the Armed Forces Chief Warrant Officer rented a car and went sightseeing around the bay. On the way back they stopped into a gas station to top up the tank.
The Attendant asked, “So what do you fellas do for work?” The Admiral replied, “I am the Chief of Defence of the Armed Forces and with me is the Armed Forces Chief Warrant Officer.” The young attendant quickly changed the subject and carried on with his work.
This little yarn was later passed on to me by the Armed Forces Chief. He said they both got a kick out of the young fella not believing them. To him they were a couple of customers who needed gas.
Newfoundlanders usually are not impressed with titles.
