Captain Taylor

I note several times that you requested pictures of “old.” Attached are several pictures and a clipping from the Daily News of Dec 31, 1923.

There is an error in the clipping which refers to the sunbeam. This was a sister ship to the Czarina and it was owned by Lord Bessey.

Captain Taylor was born in Carbonear and most of his foreign sailing was with MunroeÂ’s or predecessor companies. Before the Czarina, he commanded the Nellie M, the Empire and perhaps the Ethel. Andrew Horwood also refers to this event in his books Newfoundland Ships and Men, p72. Horwood also mentions several other incidents Colin had with this ship.

The crew pictured are: front row L-R: Aubrey Lang-cook, James Connors-mate, Colin Taylor-Master, Unidentified sailor

Back row, L-R: unidentified sailor, Edward Snow-sailor, William Snow-boson, Unidentified sailor. The names of the unidentified sailors are John Keats, Reuben Tizzard and John OÂ’Neil.

Capt Taylor retired from the sea after returning home (he had had a number of stormy experiences) and became a customs officer. He died in 1937 at the Grenfell Hospital in St. Anthony and is buried in the General Protestant Cemetery on Waterford Bridge Road.

I am his grandson.
