Caplin Catch Cod in Conception Bay
A Time to Remember
A memorable vacation back home in July of 1979, a fishing trip with my dad, Walter Porter of Hibb's Cove, Conception Bay.
Early one morning in my dad's small wooden punt, with a slightly westerly breeze blowing offshore, we headed to one of his favourite spots, on the Outer Ledge. We baited our hand lines with caplin, and before our lines reached bottom, both of us had a codfish. Within two or three hours, we hauled in about 60 cod, all about the same size my dad is holding up in the photo.
Now, with all our bait gone, we headed for home. I flew back to Etobicoke with two dozen frozen cod fillets, gave some away, and Dad split and salted the rest for the winter.
My dad passed away in the latter part of 1985.
