"the morning began like any other. i dragged myself upstairs to eat a quick bite and begin my day. as i headed downstairs for the morning meeting, i popped a bagel into the toaster. it was a tight squeeze but i forced it into the slot, pushing the handle down before i went downstairs. as the manager waded through yesterday’s sales, a loud buzzer sounded. i realized that it was the fire alarm. as everyone made their way towards the exit, a feeling of dread emerged in the pit of my stomach. could it be? was it possible that the fire department was racing through town to extinguish my bagel? as the fire trucks wailed into the lot, my worst fears were confirmed. store opening was delayed as the fire department raced upstairs to extinguish my well-done breakfast. i confessed my mistake to the manager and sheepishly proceeded upstairs to the stench of my burnt bagel and the laughter of my co-workers. needless to say, i haven’t eaten a bagel at work since!
